Small Business Accounting, Revisited

(5) Comments

The kids behind the online accounting app Less Accounting (previously mentioned here; and yes they do need a better name) have issued some improvements and changes.

  • IMPORTANT: Please go to the edit business screen and make sure the your currency is selected. (As part of the paypal feature, we changed the way currency symbols are handled.)

  • IMPORTANT: In about two weeks we will be redoing all of the templates. If you are in love with your template or color, please send us an email and tell us. Otherwise, it might be gone.

  • NEW FEATURE: Reoccurring Expenses & Invoice.

  • NEW FEATURE: Accept Paypal from an invoice. Just edit your business settings to include your Paypal email account (requires an account with Paypal).

  • NEW FEATURE: Added filter by contact on payables and receivables report.

  • NEW FEATURE: Added Payroll reports.

  • EASIER TO USE: Invoices simpler, you can now add a line item before saving.

  • EASIER TO USE: Reference numbers are easier to use. They automatically increment, even if you change the text in the field.

  • BUG FIX: Wesabe less broken. We have been working with Wesabe to stabilize change their API so it wont be broken in Less Accounting.

Less Accounting was one of the apps I reviewed more favourably last time. I'll check their improvements out when I get a chance and report back. I'm still waiting for Blinksale to implement the changes they mentioned a few months ago. Tick, tock, tick, tock.

Hi Luc,

I’m one of the kids behind Less Accounting. You are the first person who does not like the name. May I ask why you don’t like it? Do you have some other ideas?

Hi Steven! Thanks for dropping by. Hope my comment about your app’s name didn’t come off the wrong way.

First off, I really do like what you and Allan have put together with Less Accounting, and that’s not just an attempt to help remove my foot from my mouth! I’ve been hunting for the right app for my needs (as mentioned above here) for a long time now, and only you and Blinksale come closest so far: Ease of use; the right price; looks great; does a lot simply; just WORKS.

In answer to your question:
While “Less Accounting” certainly says what your app is about, the name just seems cumbersome to me, especially considering the app itself is about simplicity. (And, no, this is not a vote for anything web-2.0-like, ending with an “r” like Ledgr or Accountr!) I don’t have any good ones off the top of my head though. And if everyone else likes the current name, plus you’ve already established a presence using it, there’s no point in changing it anyway.

Mind if I ask a couple of questions re: LessAccounting?

1. Can I create invoices in multiple currencies (i.e.: some in CDN$, some in US$, some in UK£, some in €uros, etc…), or do I have to lock myself in to using one currency only? As a freelance illustrator/designer, I end up working with clients from everywhere, and it’s simpler if I can bill them in a currency that makes sense to them. (It’s common enough to bill in US$ for almost anyone in the world, but as a Canadian it’s impractical for me to do all my billing that way.)

2. Are there any plans to add a quick-and-easy way to mass-import contacts (from a vcard file for example)?

Thanks!

do you have an RSS feed for your ‘recommended blog posts’?

Sure is! Here’s the link:
http://www.google.com/reader/public/atom/user/12383921201511209548/state/com.google/broadcast

This is a feature built-into Google Reader, wherein you can select blog posts you find interesting and “share” them onto a single page. The page is auto-generated via G. Reader and you can include a little widget on your blog (as I did in my sidebar on the index page). Pretty sweet!

Ran across your comments about Less Accounting… but also found www.efinancials.com, a full accounting software application, they look to be in Beta, but looks like they have a full featured product.
